Chris Hayes, Managing Director of both BISHTA and SPATA, commented:

“We set a high standard for our judges from across both the pool and spa industry to score each entry on visual impression and technical merit. This means that an award won at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is very well deserved, and ownership of at least one award stands as a strong endorsement to consumers of the standard of work a winning company offers”.

First Class Makeover for Trefeddian Hotel

Aqua blue designs were recently commissioned to produce designs for the total update of the pool hall at the Trefeddian Hotel in Aberdovey, West Wales.

The pool and pool building were over 40 years old and did not enhance the image of this first class seaside hotel. Not only was the pool in a very sad state but the building was costing an unaffordable amount to heat and the changing rooms were uninviting.

The Art of Swimming Pool Design

The Origins of Swimming Pool Design

The "Great Bath" at the site of Mohenjo-Daro in modern-day Pakistan was most likely the first swimming pool, dug during the 3rd millennium BC

The “Great Bath” at the site of Mohenjo-Daro in modern-day Pakistan was most likely the first swimming pool, dug during the 3rd millennium BC.

Swimming pools have been around for more than five thousand years. However, it wasn’t until the mid 19th century that their popularity began to spread. By 1837 six indoor pools with diving boards were designed and built in London.

Swimming finally began to take off following the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, which included swimming races.

After the Second World War, swimming pool design and construction saw tremendous growth. This could be attributed to the fact that millions of people were given swimming training during the war, creating a greater interest in the sport.

Home swimming pools became popular in the United States and the publicity given to swimming sports by Hollywood films like Esther Williams Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) made a home pool a desirable status symbol. Mirroring the glamour of Hollywood, Los Angeles quickly became the “swimming pool capital of the world”.

By the 1970s, there were more than a million swimming pools in the United States, many of them private residential pools. Today there are ten times this amount, including 3 million spas and hot tubs.

SPATEX 2014 – The Pool & Spa Show

Ricoh Arena - SPATEX ExhibitionAqua Blue Designs took a day out to check out the new SPATEX venue at the Ricoh Centre, Coventry.

SPATEX is the UK’s largest dedicated event for the entire wet leisure industry, attracting pool builders and installers, retailers, designers and architects, distributors, general builders and manufacturers.

Director of Aqua Blue Designs, Michael Cormacey, commented:

What a pleasure to be able to simply drive in on an uncongested road system and park for free and walk straight in to the show. In that respect it was everything that Brighton is not i.e. ‘auto friendly’.

We were impressed with the straight forward layout of the exhibition hall and the helpful staff. More than one exhibitor had mentioned how user friendly the hall is for unloading, setting up and breaking displays.
